January was toothbrush and toothpaste month for Operation Christmas Child.

We have collected 37 toothbrushes and 15 tubes of toothpaste to date!

Our goal is 100 boxes, so we are short of our goal, but are confident that we will meet it.

Februrary is small stuffed toys month.

Update on Toni Lopez, Mamie Moore's sister.

"Thank you all for your prayers for me! They are both needed and appreciated. We received definitive confirmation yesterday that we are on the right track and the chemo has started to work as there is visible improvement. Praise the Lord!!!"

Thank you all for praying for my sister. She is not yet well, but headed in the right direction. Please continue to pray for her healing. She will start another round of chemo next week.

Tonya Is Sick

As many of you know, Tonya has been sick at her stomach since her last hospital stay 5 weeks ago. Just before her picc line was pulled the doctor ordered blood and urine tests to make sure everything was clear. Both tests returned normal so the line came out. Since that time, Tonya has continued to be very sick at her stomach. I have been after her for two weeks to call the doc and get another culture set up. Finally, after much nagging (from me for a change), she called the doc and a urine culture was repeated Thursday of last week. The doctor himself called me this afternoon (Tuesday) and said, Tonya's culture was showing positive for Enterococcus again. The only thing is, this time he said the bacteria is only sensitive to Vancomycin. This particular antibiotic does not come in pill form, only I.V. so, it appears Tonya will be spending her New year in the hospital receiving I.V. antibiotics yet again. I certainly hope the saying about what you do on New Year's Day you will be doing the rest of the year isn't true. I will keep you all updated as much as I can. If you are my friend on facebook check there as well.

I am very worried that since this time the bacteria is only killed by one specific antibiotic that in the near future if these infections continue she may develop one that can't be treated with modern medicine. Brian

Operation Christmas Child yearlong project!

A new year is upon us! After reading an article in The Alabama Baptist December 22, 2011 issue
I have been inspired to make our OCC project a yearlong event!

Bible markers will be handed out in January with a monthly OCC schedule for our church. We will be collecting items for our shoe boxes January through October in 2012.

I am excited about this new fun idea and hope others will be too!

Tonya Readmitted to Hospital

Just a note to let you all know that I had to take Tonya to the ER last night with a temp of 105.1. I called her doctor and he said she needed to be admitted so he could find out what was going on. He said you don't normally run a temp of this magnitude unless something is going on. He said he is going to find out what it is but we have to wait on some tests.
I worked yesterday and didn't get home until 7:30. We left at 9:30 headed to the ER and I didn't get back home until 4 this morning after getting up at 4 yesterday morning. I had to call in sick or I would have had to do another 12 hours today with no sleep.
The doctor came in this morning and said Tonya has some infection in her urine, but otherwise blood work looks fine. I find this difficult to believe since she has been so sick the past few days.
I will keep you all updated when I can. Thank you, Brian

Just a brief note to let you all know that Tonya came home this afternoon around 1:30. She will have to be on antibiotics for 14 days, but she can do this at home. Hopefully, she will be able to stay home for a while now. She was able to avoid the hospital this time for 7 months before having to go back. Brian

Tonya Update

This afternoon, the doctor said it appears the original infection Tonya was being treated for is gone. However, now the blood culture is beginning to grow another bacteria. We do not yet know what it is so the doctors do not know which antibiotic to treat it with as of yet. Both Tonya's medical doctor and the infection control doctor said they do not believe the blood culture is a false positive and they firmly believe that there is another type of bacteria growing in Tonya's blood. We still have no idea how this infection began since Tonya never had a urinary tract infection this time. Hopefully, we will know more tomorrow. Until then, keep the faith. Brian

Tonya Is Very Sick And In Stringfellow

Tonya got really sick during the night last night with a temperature of 102 and kept me up for most of it. When she called the doctor this morning, he wanted her in his office as soon as she could get there. I left work, took her to the doctor and he immediately put her back in the hospital. Tonya is back in Stringfellow, room 339. We do not know exactly what is wrong yet but it is something or she would not be this sick. Hopefully we will know more tomorrow. Brian

Bring a bag of candy to the church van and help reach out

to the children, and adults, in our town. This is an excellent way to

reach those who do not have a church and invite them to attend

church next Sunday. We can reach people in this neutral setting that we might never reach any other way.

There are many ways to help tomorrow night.

Volunteer to help with a game... judge a contest... give out candy and

Christian items from the church van, to name a few.

Tonya Not Progressing Well

The doctor came in this morning and told Tonya, despite his best efforts her potassium and magnesium are still low even though she has been getting them by IV since she has been in the hospital.
He said she is going to need to be on IV antibiotics for at least a couple of weeks even after she comes home. Since the labs are all messed up, the coming home thing may have to wait until Sunday or Monday. Right now that is still anyone's guess, but I think if they can get them back into normal range she should be able to come home sometime this weekend, we hope.
She is still hurting in her side and they say it is not a result of the current infection, however, no one seems to know what is causing it. It is looking like all the tests that are going to be done have been done. I am not aware of anymore tests that are on the schedule at this time. I don't know what else is to come but hopefully she will be home by the end of the weekend. Brian

Tonya Update

The doctor says Tonya has a blood stream infection and the bacteria is growing Enterococcus. He said she will have to be on IV antibiotics for two or three weeks and he is going to call the infection control doctor. He said the infection appears to have gotten into her blood stream from a urinary infection. He also said it appears there may be some colitis going on and possibly Chrones disease. He said the colonoscopy would either confirm or rule out Chrones disease and or ulcerative colitis. I will send another update after the tests are completed later today. Brian

Tonya In Hospital

Just a note to let you all know that Tonya was admitted to Stringfellow Hospital for some tests. She has been losing weight and over the past 8 months or so has managed to lose about 9 pounds. At her doctors visit yesterday he said he was worried about Tonya losing that much weight over that short amount of time. He said due to the weight loss he was going to put her in the hospital and run some tests to see what is going on. He has several tests on the schedule and I will keep you all updated as much as I can. This weekend is my weekend to work so the updates may be few and far between but I will get them out as soon as I can. If anyone would like to talk to Tonya she can be reached on her cell phone at 256-613-3486 or directly on the room phone at 256-235-8344.

Tonya Surgery

Tonya has stones in her bladder and they are going to have to go in there and get them. Her surgery is Aug. 8th at UAB. We have to be there at 9:30.

At Dad's oncology apt. today the Doctor said the cancer is gone and there is nothing but some scarring left where the tumor was. They are going to repeat the scan again in 4 months to see if the tumor has returned. We need prayer for him to stop smoking so it will not be back. A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter.

'Don't forget your sisters,' she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. 'They'll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you may have, you are still going to need sisters. Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them.'

'Remember that 'sisters' means ALL the women...your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. 'You'll need other women. Women always do.'

What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman thought. Haven't I just gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely my husband and the family we may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her mother. She kept contact with her sisters and made more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her mother really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, sisters are the mainstays of her life.

After more than 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've learned:

Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't live as long as we do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Careers end.

BUT.........

Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach.

When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you....or come in and carry you out.

Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family: all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and neither would I. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other.

Every day, we are here for each other.

Short and very sweet: There are more than twenty angels in this world. Ten are peacefully sleeping on clouds. Nine are playing. And one is reading this at this moment.

John encountered a pothole while riding his bicycle. Moments later he encountered the ground fracturing his hip. His hip has been repaired with pins and John is back at home. Pray for his speedy and complete healing and a pain free hip.

Twinkies and Root Beer

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons.

The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie.

The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer.

Again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?

"He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? God's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!"

Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked," Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?"

He replied, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." However, before his son responded, he added," You know, he's much younger than I expected."

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

Burnt Biscuits

When I was a little boy, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said, "Baby, I love burned biscuits."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your Mamma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides - a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!"

You know, life is full of imperfect things...and imperfect people. I'm not the best housekeeper or cook. What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker! We could extend this to any relationship in fact - as understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

Sermon Without a Word

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the preacher decided to visit him.

It was a chilly evening. The preacher found the man at home alone sitting before a blazing fire.

Guessing the reason for his preacher's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The preacher made himself at home, but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the preacher took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The preacher glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the preacher reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday."

We live in a world today which tries to say too much with too little, consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken.

THINKING ABOUT GOD

Richard Fairchild tells the following story in his book, "Not Far From the Kingdom of God":

In the days of the circuit riders a minister was out riding one afternoon and came upon a man out working in his field.

"Fine day, isn't it?" the minister called out.

"It's fine for you", the man replied, "All you have to do is ride around on that horse thinking about God all day long, while I have to sweat here in this field and then walk home afterward. I don't think it is right you should have things so easy while I have to work so hard."

"On the contrary", the minister answered, "thinking about God is one of the most difficult things you can do. And to prove it, I'll give you this horse if you can think about God and nothing else for one minute."

"You're on," said the man and immediately he sat down in silence. Thirty seconds later he looked up at the minister, and said, "Does that include the saddle?"

I would agree that thinking about God and nothing else is a very difficult thing to do. I would also add, though, that it is just as hard for ministers as it is anyone else!

The apostle Paul wrote, "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:2).

But our mind is filled nearly every minute of the day with things on this earth -- concerns about things that have happened, concerns about things that will (or might) happen, concerns about what we have (or don't have), concerns about how to get what we don't have, concerns about people that have done us wrong, concerns about what we want others to do for us.

And our mind is so crowded with the things of this world, that there's just not much room left for God. It's hard to think about God and God alone, for there is so much competing for our attention.

Allow me to give you this challenge -- think about God and nothing else for one minute. If you can achieve that goal, strive for five minutes. May thoughts of God increasingly fill your mind so that you can eventually say with the Psalmist all day long, "I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works." (Psalm 145:15)

The Greatest Paradox

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials. James 1:2

Many things about the kingdom of God seem odd to those who are not its citizens. Kingdom citizens gain by giving, live by dying, and become great by becoming least. But perhaps the greatest oddity in the kingdom of God is when Christians find joy in pain and suffering. There is something unnatural about rejoicing in the midst of trials.

But a clarification must be made. The Bible says we are to give thanks "in everything," not "for everything." The Bible is transrational, not irrational; it represents thinking at a higher level, not a lower level. "In" the experience of trials and trouble, joy can still be found because we know that every experience has a purpose and place in God's plan for our lives. Who would not find joy in having his faith proved to be genuine? Peter writes that trials and suffering come for that very reason: to prove that the faith we cling to is the real thing (1 Peter 1:6-7). In such revelation and confirmation is found true joy.

If you are experiencing a painful moment in your life right now, you don't have to fake having joy "for" the pain. Your joy is to be in the knowledge that God is in control and your faith in Him is unshakeable.

Katie to be Scheduled for Surgery

Katie found out this evening that her gallbladder surgery is going to be on Nov. 17 at Gadsden Regional. It was so late when she got out of the surgeons office that we don't know a time yet. The office is going to call the hospital Friday and get a time scheduled. I will let you all know the time as soon as I find out. Brian

Tonya Is Home

Today we were met with somewhat good news. This evening we were met with some not so good news. The urologist came in this morning and said the urine culture grew out a bacteria that he couldn't even pronounce and he wasn't sure what to treat it with. We waited until 5PM on the infection control doctor to come in. He said the good thing was that he knew what type of bacteria the culture grew out but the bad news was Tonya is allergic to the antibiotic that they would use to treat it. He sent Tonya home and said he would look at the culture again tomorrow with the biologist in the lab and call her, hopefully with a solution. Right now it is a wait and see thing but at least Tonya is home for now.

Tonya Update 1

Just an update on Tonya. She is still in the hospital and this morning the urologist came in and said the culture wasn't growing anything. The infection control doctor came in around 12 and said the culture was starting to grow something. He said he would know more Monday so we know that she will at least be there until then. I don't expect to hear any new developments before Monday.
